Alek Sigley

Cohort
2021

Alek is interested in official culture and everyday life in North Korea, and how the two interact. He seeks to combine analysis of North Korean film, literature, and media with ethnography to explore what it means to live in a society where there is an irreconcilable chasm between state discourse and lived experience. From 2018-2019, he pursued graduate studies for a master's in contemporary North Korean fiction at the Kim Il Sung University College of Literature in Pyongyang. He is from Perth, Western Australia, and reads Mandarin, Korean and Japanese.
