Antonio Lopez's Book is Out!
Second year MTL student, Antonio Lopez, has published his first book of poetry, Gentefication.
Structured like a course syllabus, Gentefication nuances Latinidad as not just an immigration question, but an academic one. This collection challenges the age-old myth of the university space as the immigrant's vehicle of mobility, smuggling Spanglish and slangs inside so-called 'high-level registers' to create a gente-fied language. It notably explores intersections of Islam and Latinidad and sustains dialogue between James Baldwin and the MexicanAmerican speaker, weaving a poetic solidarity through literary lineage, discourse, and collage. The astute criticism and wideranging cultural references of this speaker will resonate with readers who appreciate equally forthright resistance verse and imaginative figurations.
