Coterm Requirements

Advising

Coterminal Master's Degree students should identify a faculty member willing to serve as program advisor, preferably a member of MTL's affiliated faculty.

Coursework

A candidate for the Coterminal Master’s Degree in Modern Thought and Literature must complete at least 45 units of advanced graduate work to be divided in the following manner:

  • The required introductory colloquium, MTL 334A: Concepts of Modernity I (5 units). Students may substitute with MTL 334B: Concepts of Modernity II: Performing Identities (5 units) with permission of the Director.
  • 20 units in a coherent and individually arranged interdisciplinary program, including at least one further graduate colloquium and relevant to the student’s study of literature.
  • 20 units in a modern literature, from 1750 to the present.

During the spring quarter of their senior year candidates may, with consent of their instructors, register for graduate courses—usually one or two. During the fifth year (or the three quarters after the quarter in which the student has completed 180 units), students will take the remainder of the required 45 units. All programs must be approved by the student’s Master’s Program advisor.

Study Plan

Students must submit an initial study plan in their application to the program. During the quarter they plan to confer their degree, students must submit a final study plan for approval by the the Director of Modern Thought and Literature. This plan must be approved by the student’s advisor and submitted to the Academic Services Administrator (antnguyn [at] stanford.edu (antnguyn[at]stanford[dot]edu)).
